Congregational Goals for Interim periods:

For the congregation to see itself as the people of God with or without a rector
For the congregation to clarify or re-define its identity and sense of direction
For the congregation to identify the gifts it has to move in the desired direction and the gifts that it needs from a priest
For the congregation to find a priest with the desired gifts

A mantra for all congregations:

"We have a saviour, we need a priest"

Goals of the Diocese of Newark Deployment office:

To focus congregations on doing steps well, not simply accomplishing steps, not doing steps quickly.
To engage entire congregations with:
- Self definition and direction
- Priorities for next priest
- Praying
- Seeking names of possible matches
To help congregations maximize the number of potential matches, not maximize the number of clergy names
To help clergy discern and find the ministries to which God is calling them
To help congregations and clergy focus on best match, not the best priest or the "best" congregation
