I visited the Diocese of Haiti with other Province II bishops in January. This poorest of nations, where the average annual income is $100 and the unemployment rate is 90%, is also the largest of our dioceses with 100,000 members. I was astonished and moved by the church’s commitment and effectiveness in addressing the spiritual, social, and physical needs of its members. Almost every church has a school, often the only one for miles around.
